AN INSIGHT TO NGASSALOGY TRUMPET
My father introduced me to the trumpet.
As a fantastic trumpeter and all-round musician he took me most of the time with him to his concerts. Sometimes at my tender age he always made to carry the trumpet ahead to the concerts or rehearsals and he will come after me. This was a kind of unconscious initiation and introduction to the music world. Musicians always came home. Some came to learn trombone, guitar or saxophone or singing and trumpet. But he relly didn't teach trumpet than often, most people he taught dropped of later. Trumpet was too difficult . I recall him saying that he reserved the teaching of trumpet for his sons only. My uncle played trumpet too, so do my brother. Trumpet is the most important heritage I got from my father. I had a strong passion for football and most people and friends were sure i would become a football player , jugging on how i was engaged in football, playing, organizing, coaching . But when each time there was music home, stick around . I enjoy listening them talk and play. I think i was a good listener. I am still.
The exposure to this environment was premodial. I had had a example to emulate .
My teaching is therefore based on passing on this endowed spiritual gift that has been bestowed on me. I rely started teaching 12 years ago with my first jazz workshop for the Goethe institut Munich. After all these years,i have developed a liking in doing it and I get as much pleasure especially when the students meet up with their homework expectation. It becomes a give and take in both directions. A fantastic musician is not necessarily a good pedagogue/ TEACHER. But there is a lot of music and musicianship you can learn just from being around musicians( especially those who can play) ; Things that you might never learn in a music school .These years of teaching als well as directing workshops has help mold my experience and knowhow in the field. I have taught student from 6 years old to 50 years old. I always bear in mind that any aspiring trumpet player has its own inner qualities that needs to be develop and brought out. My teaching method is match with a sustainable coaching attitude.
